Damian Thompson is at present based in Sydney.   He began dancing many years ago and was a professional ballroom teacher and salsa teacher before becoming entangled in the web of tango. For the past 11 years, he has focused exclusively on Argentine tango and has taught and performed
in many places around the world.

In the past 4 years, he has taught in Buenos Aires and in Europe, including Italy, Germany, Poland, Holland and Latvia. Over the past couple of years Damian toured and taught in the USA and Canada and performed with some of their most famous dancers. New York was the highlight, with him being asked to perform at the most popular milongas and also on New Yearʼs Eve. Some of those performances are available on YouTube.

Damian has also been invited to perform for The Royal Australian Ballet Company in Melbourne. Recently, he has of course, been teaching in his own country, Australia - and whilst on tour has performed in every city and community in Australia with a recent highlight at the Darwin Festival to Gurrumul's award winning music (with permission).

His style is based on years of learning from many different maestros and tango styles. His teaching is based up on an on-axis style and using the principles of technique to achieve a symbiotic relationship with both the music and his partner.

Prior to focusing on tango, Damian taught martial arts for over 20 years and that has enabled him to understand the body mechanics and reasons why we do things in tango that sometimes seem at ﬁrst difﬁcult.

Many describe him as a very playful, fun teacher. Damian teaches and conveys the basic and essential concepts of the most complex moves in a systematic, logical fashion. He is a collaborator in the teaching and development of tango, a provocateur who inspires passion in the art of dancing tango.

Classes Starting again at Ewingsdale on Wednesday 24th Aug 2011.
1) a 6 week beginners course in the ‘essential elements of Tango’, starts 6.00pm. $60.00 This is appropriate for absolute beginners and people who have some experience but would benefit from some detailed attention to technique.
2) a 6 week pre-paid block for partnered couples at beginners 2 /improver level starts 7.00pm. ($60.00) This is appropriate for people with a basic knowledge of tango or those with a fairly extensive knowledge and who would like to concentrate on 'improving milonguero technique and important basic moves'.
3) a 6 week pre-payed block for partnered couples at Improver/Intermediate level. starts 8.00pm.($60.00). This is appropriate for all students who have danced for a year or more and would like to
'develop their repertoire and technique in open hold moves and more complex figures'.

Students who would like to do two levels can participate in the level above or below their own (providing they dance with their own partner) for an additional $5.00. fee which can be paid on the night. We are excited to bring you the talents of Michael Kluger ACCORDION PLAYER. Michael has been consultant/accordion teacher to keyboard players in major stage productions of "Chicago", and taught Nadine Garner to play accordion for her stage performance in "Cabaret".

He has performed as a featured artist with the "Accordions of the World" and "Viva la Fisarmonica" stage shows. He composed the music for a comedy/musical cabaret show written by, and starring, Christopher North, performed at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2011.

Michael's eclectic taste in musical performance includes the Argentinian tango and the works of Astor Piazzolla. He has played bandoneon on stage and on recordings. In 2009, Michael was guest artist at the Riverina Summer School of Strings where he performed a programme of Astor Piazzolla's compositions on piano accordion, accompanied by members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.He will be bandoneonist in the 2011 Sydney production of "The Threepenny Opera" (Kurt Weill) under musical director Richard Gill.

Milonga uses the same basic elements as Tango and requires a greater relaxation of legs and body. Movement is normally faster. It is rather a kind of rhythmic walking without complicated figures, with a much more "rustic" style than Tango.There are different styles of Milonga: "Milonga Lisa" (Simple Milonga), in which the dancer steps on every beat of the music; and "Milonga con Traspié," in which the dancer uses Traspiés or contrapasos (changes of weight from one foot to the other and back again in double time or three steps in two beats) to interpret the music. Thus, dynamics may be danced without having to run fast or without the use of much space."

In the heart of San Telmo, this historically restored building has become a highlight of the cultural scene of Buenos Aires. La Ventana is a journey back in time. Its historical interior has been conserved and provides the perfect stage for this unique event.

The Grand Juan D'Arienzo Orchestra and a Quintet will join two tango singers, six dance couples, and a traditional dance company, with a total of 32 artists on stage.

The Argentinian and Uruguayan tradition of the Tango, now familiar around the world, was developed by the urban lower classes in Buenos Aires and Montevideo in the Rio de la Plata basin. Among this mix of European immigrants to the region, descendents of African slaves and the natives of the region known as criollos, a wide range of customs, beliefs and rituals were merged and transformed into a distinctive cultural identity. As one of the most recognizable embodiments of that identity, the music, dance and poetry of tango both embodies and encourages diversity and cultural dialogue. It is practised in the traditional dance halls of Buenos Aires and Montevideo, spreading the spirit of its community across the globe even as it adapts to new environments and changing times. That community today includes musicians, professional and amateur dancers, choreographers, composers, songwriters, teachers of the art and the national living treasures who embody the culture of tango. Tango is also incorporated into celebrations of national heritage in Argentina and Uruguay, reflecting the widespread embrace of this popular urban music.

What is Intangible Cultural Heritage?

The term ‘cultural heritage’ has changed content considerably in recent decades, partially owing to the instruments developed by UNESCO. Cultural heritage does not end at monuments and collections of objects. If you are doing figures and gyros (turns) all the time, people don’t see anything and that is why there is the walk- the invention of the people. In this dance of the people, which is what tango is, all the famous couples have used the walk, and they use it constantly.

The tango is on the ground, It is caressing the floor. It is the ball of the foot supporting the weight of the body, right on the axis and each person on his/her own axis. Dance - The High Squirrel's Message

A single slip would be certain death or at the very least asevere injury.
I watched it run carelessly amidst what most would consider extreme danger.

It was a squirrel.

It ran across power lines located over 30 feet above the pavement. It seemed to dance, dart and dash above me as I stood transfixed in the church door.

Here was a creature in what I thought was great danger. Such a situation would have me nearly paralyzed with fright. The squirrel danced.

I thought of the many people whom I knew. I thought how some lived like the squirrel, looking in front of them but never dwelling on what's behind or below. They had tough situations in life. Frankly, some of the situations could make you shudder; yet, they were happier than many with far smoother
conditions.

That simple squirrel on the electric wire taught me something.

I took my cell phone and snapped a picture of it. It's not a high quality picture; it was a cell phone and the sun was setting but it captured the spirit of the squirrel.

Even when you face tough situations.
Even when things are down to a thin line for support...
Even when unpleasant things could happen if you fail or fall...
Even when the wind starts blowing.

Dance.
